10 Questions You Always Wanted to Ask About Freelancing

  • by

Freelance is an increasingly popular way of working. But what is a freelancer, why are people freelancers and can I use it as a career? This article answers 10 questions about freelancing you’ve always wanted to ask.

1. What is Freelancing?

Freelancing is when someone provides his or her services within an agreed time for a fee. Freelancers (also known as contractors or service providers) are independent of the companies or individuals who hire their services. Freelancers generally work for a short period of time, although contract lengths vary and can often be extended.

2. Who can become a freelancer?

The short answer is everyone. There are no restrictions on who can become a freelancer. As long as you have the skills or services that your business or personal needs, you can provide services and become a freelancer.

3. Who hires freelancers?

Freelancers are employed by individuals and organisations, including micro-enterprises, small and medium-sized enterprises, large corporations (such as Tesco), charities, local and central governments (such as the UK Revenue and Customs) and public institutions.

4. What services do freelancers provide?

Freelancers offer various services. There isn’t really a fixed list. Some of the services provided by freelancers include:

  • Event planning and management (such as weddings, birthdays, etc.)
  • Accounting and Accounting
  • car attendant
  • Virtual assistance (e.g. e-mail and calendar management, telephone answering, etc.)
  • IT support and customer service
  • Website design and development

Experience shows that if an organization or individual micro-outsources it, it can become a freelancer!

5. What services are needed?

The demand for services varies, but research shows that in ‘economic uncertain times’ the demand for self-employed workers will increase. So now is a good time for a freelancer! Job information sites, such as itjobswatch or simply search and count the number of freelance opportunities, can provide useful information about the needs of freelance services.

However, if your service seems unwanted, don’t be discouraged. In fact, providing services with low demand also means less competition, which is good for your future income!

6. What are the advantages of freelancers?

Freelancing has many advantages. Some of my favorites are:

Be your own boss. Freelance is one of the best ways to start your own business. As your own boss, you also decide when, when and where you work.

Get paid for travel. If you like to travel, freelancing can take you across the country and beyond. More importantly, you can travel at your own expense!

Work from home or remotely. If you enjoy working from home, freelancers offer this flexibility and freelancers can enjoy a successful career. The internet has created the remote working opportunity that companies around the world love to take advantage of.

Earn money fast. Not only can freelancers get paid faster and more often than regular employees, but they also earn much more in a given period of time than regular employees doing similar work.

7. What are the disadvantages of freelancing?

But being a freelancer also has some drawbacks. Some of these are:

Annual tax return. If you are self-employed or freelance through your own business or have some income, you will need to complete a tax return with the UK Tax and Customs Administration. Fortunately, you can now do this on their website and calculate your taxes automatically.

Had to find a job. If you’re a freelancer, no boss will give you your first (or next) job. So it’s up to you to find a job. Fortunately, there are websites for freelancers that can simplify this process.

Your resume must be kept up to date. Your resume will help you find your next job (if not your first one), so you should update it as you complete the job and acquire new skills. This can be a daunting task, but it is necessary if you want to transfer your current experience and knowledge.
